What is Freemasonry
A peculiar system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols.
What does this mean?
Let's break it down into modern terms.
A peculiar system of morality.. Every member in Freemasonry must comply to the strict adherence of the Laws of the country in which they live, but more than that, they should try to be the best a person can be by affording help and assistance to others in times of distress. Never to slander others, or cause the harm.
Veiled in allegory... It basically means that we have certain things we wish not to be disclosed to non Freemasons to make our Fraternity interesting. Allegory means to use a story, poem or Picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning.
Illustrated by symbols.... You have all seen the square and compass design on masonic artifacts. These are just two of the many symbols we use for reminding us of our high level of moral standards
